Photoshop workshop- Borders

Sometimes when manipulating an image it is nice to have irregular edges instead of having a box surrounding a shot, that can be quite boring.

Again you will be using the marquee tool to help create the border, however, this time you will select the rectangular tool, this will allow to create an outline of where you want the border to be.

You will need to make sure when making your border that you leave a gap between the edges of the picture, this way you can leave enough space to delete what is left at the end of the manipulation.
Like with the other image you will need to inverse the image so that you are not manipulating what is inside the border. To do this go to select and inverse that way you manipulating what is outside the image, it is key that you do this otherwise it could completely ruin the shot.

So yo can see what will be manipulated select the quick mask tool, this can be found at the bottom of the sidebar on photoshop, once you select the option, the photo will turn red, however, what ever is outside the red box is what will be manipulated.

As you can see here what is outside the red box is what will be manipulated, if you wanted to you could erase the outside and the red will stay safe.

However for this image we want to create a filter that will go around image and give it a bit of character.

To do this go to filter and select distort, the reason we use distort is so that it creates quite an elegant border instead of just being straight lines.
Select Ocean ripple, here you can then select how violent you want the ripples to be and how large you want them. This option can work quite well on most images but on a certain few it just doesn't have the same effect.
